First-Timer's Guide: Vegan Food and Drink in Austin

First Timer's Guide: Vegan Food and Drink in Austin

Back in Austin again! We try to make a road trip to Austin 2-3 times a year. This time we partnered with Toyota to make the short trip from Dallas to Austin. The city has so much to eat and drink. It is nearly impossible to go to every restaurant and bar in one weekend.

It is, literally, too much coffee, food, and drinks for us to handle. If you are a first-timer in Austin, or a local, this is the perfect vegan food and drink guide for you. From upscale bars to cozy family restaurants, we got you covered.

Note: We walked or took a taxi to all locations where alcohol is involved.

The vegan food and bar scene in the city is growing at a rapid rate. From brunch to happy hour, Austin has something that everyone will enjoy! Even if you are vegan, vegetarian, or veg-curious, there are spots that you must check out.

We are sure that there are several places we left off this list! If you have a favorite spot, please leave a comment down below to let us know. You can find more Austin recommendations in our 2017 Vegan Food Guide.

The Alfred is a small coffee shop inside the Line Hotel in downtown Austin. Since it's in a hotel, you can order your coffee and sit anywhere in the hotel lobby, which is really aesthetically pleasing. There are few tables outside the coffee shop as well.

There's usually a line, but it moves very fast. We got the almond milk latte. It wasn't the best cup we ever had but it wasn't the worst either. The cute coffee sleeves earns this place extra points.

The Beer Plant is Austin's first plant-based gastropub, combining elevated vegan food with craft beer, wine and cocktails. This vegan restaurant has 40 craft taps to be exact. They serve up brunch and dinner plus their interior reminds us of rustic, but sophisticated, farmhouse.

We ate brunch at Beer Plant and it was fantastic. Everything was so savory and flavorful...it was unreal. We ordered the Chicken and Waffles, French Toast, and The Skillet. The Chicken and Waffles is the best selling dish here and, boy, we can see why. It was the best thing we ever ate brunch wise.

For drinks, we tried the Lavender-Blood Orange Mimosa and the Fredericksburg Spritz. Both were equally good as well.

P6 is a colorful rooftop bar at The Line Hotel! The bar's sixth-story vantage points serve up an eyeful with panoramic views across the lake, the Austin skyline, and down Congress Avenue. You can book reservations online to sit outside or inside.

If you need to snack while you sip on your cocktails, order the hummus. It comes with vegan pita bread or you can opt for veggies instead.

Kerby Lane first opened in 1980 serving made-from-scratch comfort food out of a small 1930s bungalow in Central Austin on Kerbey Lane. Now, they are an Austin favorite with multiple locations around the city.

.

Kerbey Lane Cafe remains 100% family-owned to this day and serves delicious meals that are scratch-made and affordable. For breakfast we ordered the Vegan Breakfast Platter with coffee. It came with homemade veggie breakfast patties, vegan chorizo, tofu scramble (tofu, veggies, tomato, green onion, and nutritional yeast) vegan vanilla pancakes, fruit and home fries.

The vanilla pancakes were light and fluffy. We will come back just for these! They offer weekly special vegan pancakes too. While we were there we had the option of getting the vegan special, mint chocolate chip.

1603 S Congress Ave, Austin, TX 78704

Manana is a chic, blue coffee shop located in the South Congress Hotel. The menu features handcrafted coffee drinks and local blends from Austin based tea companies.

We got a simple soy latte but they have food too. Next time we are there we want to try the Vegan Strawberry Chia + Coconut Yogurt Cup, Smoked Tofu Sandwich, and Vegan Banana "Bread" Cookie.

This cafe would be good for you to study or work in. There are a few plugs near the back so snag a seat at the long table or high top.

1807 S 1st St, Austin, TX 78704

Okay, so this restaurant isn't specifically for vegans, but they do have options. Lenior is a local farm to table restaurant with a wine garden. Yes, a wine garden! This restaurant is a little expensive, but please treat yourself by eating a four-course meal here. Our favorite course was the Vegetable Crepe.

1505 Town Creek Dr, Austin, TX 78741

Plow Burger serves plant-based burgers, wings, and fries. You can find them inside at Buzzmill coffee shop. We got the Campfire Burger and it was out of this world.

The burger was made out of Beyond Burger patty, cheese, pickles, mayo, crispy fried shoestring onions, barbecue sauce. We had to to get fries and vegan ranch on the side...because why not?

400 W 2nd St A, Austin, TX 78701

La Condesa is an award-winning Mexican restaurant located in Austin’s vibrant 2nd Street District. The modern Mexican restaurant is not vegan but it has a couple options.

We highly recommend ordering the Guacamole & Salsa Tasting, Vegana Salad, Coliflor entree, and Hongos a La Parilla entree. The Hongos was our favorite dish by far. It was made out of oak-grilled mushrooms, refried white beans, mint chimichurri, chile de árbol, avocado.

Other Austin restaurants we have tried are Via 313, Arlo's, Vegan Nom, Grizzelda's, Capital City Bakery, and Bouldin Creek Cafe. You can see our thoughts about them here. Which restaurants do you want to try? Let us know in the comments!

Until Next Time,

Tay
