WELCOME TO ADULTHOOD

Life Update and My New Job

Earlier this May I graduated from Vassar College with a Bachelor of Arts in International Studies and Arabic language and Culture. Since then I have moved back to the Lone Star State, Texas, and began to search for employment in the Dallas area. Initially, I had my heart set on a job that would allow me to leverage the specific skills I obtained as an International Studies major.  Thus, I sought out employment that dealt with the government sector, race relations, law and policy. After trying for months to get employed, I broke down and hired the best staffing agency in DFW.

What was good about this particular agency is that their mission is to motivate and inspire their clients to maximize their full potential in the work force. Not only are they caring but also they have managed to be featured on Fox 4 News and were awarded “Recruiting Team of the Year. “

In August the agency helped me book ten, approximately, different interviews. On each occasion, the interviewer stated that I was exceptional, performed well, and provide all the right answers. Even though they supplied me with little criticism, I never got the job.

As a seasoned athlete, I am SEVERELY results-oriented. So much so, that if I do not receive expected or desired results I become exasperated and disgruntled.  The problem with this mindset is that 1) inevitable failure will make you a little stir crazy and 2) it prevents you from seeing the positive in the process. While results matter, it is important to trust the process and see it as a learning opportunity. Once I reminded myself of not only this, in conjunction with God’s will for my life, I regained my optimism.

Three weeks ago my positive attitude paid off! On September 1st I went to an interviewer at Hunt Consolidated, Inc. Hunt is a family of companies that was founded in 1934. It is one of the largest privately-held companies in America. The corporation primarily operates oil and gas exploration and production, LNG, power, real estate, investments, and infrastructure.

A couple of hours after my interview with them, they called my recruiter at the agency to tell them that I got the job! I was elated! So far I have loved working for Hunt and am excited for what the future has in store for me.

Additionally, I obtained a SECOND JOB. YES!!!!! YOU READ THAT RIGHT. I realize that I might need some professional wardrobe to go with my new job. In order to pay for my new clothes, student loans and other miscellaneous bills, I got a part-time job working for a store that sells excellent professional dress for women. Despite the stigma, this store sells chic, designer clothing for discounted prices. The discount I received on items is great too! This may help or hurt me because I already want to buy the whole store. Literally.

If you want to come see me, pop into the Stein Mart located in Rockwall, Texas and say hello.

Until next time,

Tay
