5 DAY JUICE CLEANSE BY PRESSED JUICERY - WHAT TO EXPECT

Why am I juice cleansing?

This year I am taking care of my body by exercising more and eating healthier.

In order to understand the type of cleanse I bought and the effect it had on my body it is important for you to know that I am vegan. In addition to eating a vegan diet, I limit my consumption of all grains, corn, processed foods, sugar and etc. In essence, I am a vegan who loosely adheres to the rules of a paleo lifestyle.

I wanted to limit my consumption of grains and processed foods because I found myself craving “vegan junk food” like Oreos and frozen pizza. I put myself on a juice cleanse because the program flushes out toxins and cuts your cravings. As delicious as Oreos are, I needed to stop eating them so frequently.

How to order…

In order to get my juice, I reviewed to Pressed Juicery’s website and took the Cleanse Quiz. The quiz asked me a series of health and food related questions. Based on my answers, the site recommended that I try Cleanse 3 (their most intense and lowest calorie cleanse). Cleanse 3 is for experienced cleansers and green juice lovers.

In addition to Cleanse 3, Pressed Juicery offers Cleanse 1 (their most caloric cleanse for first timers and athletes) and Cleanse 2 (for those who maintain a healthy lifestyle).

Even though the site recommended Cleanse 3 for me, I am by no means an experienced cleanser and I do not love green juice. BUT since I am vegan and eat a lot of vegetables already I chose to order Cleanse 3 with modifications. I was able to make modifications by building my own custom juice cleanse. I kept all the juices from Cleanse 3 except for one green and a citrus juice. I subbed in a root and a different citrus juice in its place.

The juices I chose were:

  • #1 Greens 2 (kale, spinach, romaine, parsley, cucumber, celery, apple, lemon)

  • #2 Citrus 2 (pineapple, apple, lemon, mint)

  • #3 Greens 1 (kale, spinach, romaine, parsley, cucumber, celery, apple, lemon, ginger)

  • #4 Roots 3 (carrot, kale, romaine, spinach, parsley, apple, ginger)

  • #5 Greens 3 (cucumber, pineapple, lemon, coconut water, aloe vera)

  • #6 Vanilla Almond (almonds, dates, vanilla bean, sea salt)

*Note: Pressed Juicery has retail locations where you can walk in and pick up your juice. As of yet, they do not have a location in Dallas so I ordered a 5 DAY CLEANSE (gasp) online.

Prep Prep Prep

Before we talk about the taste of the drinks and how I felt during the cleanse, I have to tell you that you must prepare. You literally have to pregame for this cleanse. For real, for real!

Pressed Juicery says, “To get the most out of your cleanse, preparation is essential. You’ll want to start weaning yourself off of your usual indulgences and make adjustments a few days before you start…We recommend eating wholesome, whole foods, and skipping out on meats and poultry, refined starches (bread, white rice, and pasta), dairy products, sugar, alcohol and nicotine, and sushi. So what can you eat? If cutting out all meat is a little much, supplement with fish – and enjoy fresh salads and starchy veggies.”

I wasn’t eating any meat or dairy before my cleanse; however, I was consuming wine, beer, and cocktails. I made Butternut Squash Tacos with Jalapeno “Ranch” and washed it down with two cans of hard cider a day before my cleanse began. Oops!

The website told me that if I didn’t prepare I would have headaches, feel lethargic and have detox symptoms.

What to Expect:

Day 1

Saturday, February 18, 2017

I woke up at 11 am excited and ready to conquer the world!

Each day included six 16-ounce drinks that are labeled in the sequence of consumption (see photo below).

I was thoroughly surprised by the taste of all the juices in my cleanse. Here’s a description of each:

Drink #1 - Greens 2: Kale, spinach, romaine, parsley, cucumber, celery, apple and lemon.

I read online that people LOVE this drink. Since Greens 2 was a fan favorite, I had high expectations.

I noticed that the drink itself is very sweet...almost as sweet as dessert. The apple and splash of lemon overpower the kale, spinach and romaine. You can barely taste it! Overall I give this drink 5 stars and would order it again.

Drink #2 – Citrus 2: Apple, lemon, mint and pineapple.

This drink tasted like a fruity mojito! I’m serious. The pineapple comes through strong. I recommend blending this juice with ice or mixing it with water to tone it down. Citrus 2 has 24g of sugar per serving so I am glad that I had this drink in the morning time.

Drink #3 - Greens 1: Kale, spinach, romaine, parsley, cucumber, celery and lemon.

Woah, there is a big difference between this drink and Greens 2 (my first drink). Greens 1 tastes like a green juice…aka a salad. Even though the lemon adds a nice acidity to the celery and spinach, I have to chug this drink because it’s not all that tasty. However, it is better than the other green juices I have tried from other companies. I give this drink 3 stars. I would order it again ONLY because it has 30 calories and 1g of sugar per serving.

Drink #4 - Roots 3: Apple, beet, lemon and ginger.

If you love ginger then you will love this drink! The apple and ginger easily overpower the beets in this juice. The ginger adds spicy, tangy flavor. I had to sip this juice slowly so that I didn’t have to burn my throat from the hotness of the ginger.

Drink #5 - Greens 3: Apple, celery, cucumber, ginger, kale, lemon, parsley, romaine and spinach.

I really liked this green juice too. It is not as sweet as Greens 1 and it has a kick of ginger in it. Greens 3 is a nice balance between Greens 1 and 2.

Drink #6 – Vanilla Almond: vanilla, almonds, dates, vanilla bean and sea salt.

When I was conducting my Pressed Juicery research, I read that most people liked the Vanilla Almond juice. They compared it to a milkshake or ice cream. I don’t find ice cream appealing, #vegan, but I did have high hopes for this juice.

I found that the juice tasted like almond milk (the original, unsweetened kind) you buy from the store. They only difference is that it tasted like vanilla and dates! In the past, I tried some protein almond juices and I did not like how they tasted like ice cream. I loved this one from Pressed Juicery though!

Day 2

Sunday, February 19, 2017

I woke up at 11:57 am wishing that I had paid for a 1 day cleanse ($49) instead of a 5 day cleanse ($229). I was ready to eat real food!

Weighing myself, however, gave me the inspiration to keep going because I lost 4-5 pounds. YESSSSS! I am not doing this cleanse to lose weight. I must admit, seeing the numbers go down gave me motivation.

I was so caught up in my success that I forgot to drink my first juice of the day. Pressed Juicery recommends that you drink the first juice right when you wake up. I was an idiot and decided to wait an hour after I woke up. I NEARLY FAINTED IN THE SHOWER! That’s how hungry I was. I learned my lesson for sure.

After my shower incident, I was doing fine drinking my juice, taking naps and watching Netflix. I didn’t have any headaches or “cleansing symptoms.”

I almost broke my cleanse when I had to get out of the house and run errands. I took one whiff of my mom’s tacos and was hungry instantly. My cleanse program has a total of 1,120 calories per day so I wasn’t starving by any means. I think my hunger was mental? Either way, I wanted something other than this damn juice I was drinking!

For situations like this Pressed Juicery says, “If you’re feeling exceptionally wiped out and need a little something to help pick you up, try some non-caffeinated herbal tea, or add a pinch of Celtic sea salt to your drinks. Still hungry? Try drinking some veggie broth…”

I followed their directions and had a cup of warm veggie broth. It was so nice drinking something that was warm because all the juices on the cleanse are cold-pressed.

Day 3

Monday, February 20, 2017

I woke up at 6:20 am semi-refreshed and hungry. Ugh, so hungry! I had my first drink after I got to the office around 7:30-8am.

Pressed Juicery recommends that you drink 8-10 glass of water. I am sure that I wasn’t drinking enough water on Day 1 and 2. Thus, I made an effort to hydrate more. All this drinking means that I was peeing like a sailor every hour. I had run to the bathroom every time the urge hit me!

Some friends and I participate in a Monday Night League for indoor volleyball. I wasn’t sure if I was going to have enough energy to jump or run around. To my surprise, I was full of energy. I played two games and wasn’t hungry. Amazing…right?

Day 4

Tuesday, February 21, 2017

Since I chose to do a 5 day cleanse, my juices came in two separate shipments. The juices are packed fresh and are guaranteed to last for 3 days. If I had my entire order upfront then the all my juices for Day 4 and 5 would spoil.

This makes sense to me.

The separate shipment situation became a problem when I woke up on Day 4 and didn’t have any juice because I was waiting for FedEx to deliver it. To keep me full until my juice arrived, I sipped on a cup of veggie broth (15 calories) and caffeine-free herbal tea.

I didn’t start juice #1 until 11:30 am. This was challenging because I had to consume 6 juices plus water in a 9-hour window. That’s a lot of liquids (*Note: When you schedule your cleanse be sure to have overlapping dates so that you won’t run out of juice).

In the end, it was all worth it because I lost another pound. Hooray!

Day 5

Wednesday, February 22, 2017

DAY 5! I’m excited!!!

I am googling clean, raw post-cleanse recipes and creating a grocery list now. I want real, chewable vegetables to eat.

See “Post-Cleanse” for how it was easing back into real food.

Post-Cleanse

My results of my cleanse were amazing. My skin looked and felt better, I didn’t crave sugar or junk food, I was sleeping better and I lost 6 pounds!

The cleanse was great for me because it reset my taste buds. Instead of wanting Oreos and coffee, I craved salad, fresh fruit, and tea. The first two days of eating food were rough but it got better as my stomach got used to solid food.

Did I Cheat?

No, I did not cheat on the cleanse. The only thing I consumed besides juice was a breath mint and two pieces of gum.

Would I Do It Again?

Yes! I probably wouldn’t do a cleanse for that long again but I could do it for 3 days. If you are on the fence about trying Pressed Juicery here are some selling points to get you on board:

  • The company is not focused on weight loss. Their cleanse program is an occasional way to pause and reflect from hectic normal life routines—and to take a dietary choice with them

  • The taste of all their juices are better than other juice companies

  • All the juices are prepared for you. No food prep needed

  • Juices are delivered to you on any date you select

  • Mood and general well-being increase significantly after the cleanse

  • Their cleanse programs are full of antioxidants, vitamins, fiber and compounds that support your immune system

  • It is cheap! Compared to the competition, Pressed Juicery is more affordable
